Sister Marie Carol Hurley
Barry University, November 2000
Sister
Marie Carol Hurley was introduced as the "woman behind the Woman", the Woman being
Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin 20 years the President of Barry University. Sister Marie
Carol has been an active participant in the growth of Barry for the last 45 years.
For 20 years, Sister Marie Carol chaired the Department of Speech and Drama. During
this time, Barry constructed Broad Auditorium, built a reputable theater company,
and the David Brinkley Studio began producing regular programming for cable television.
Sister Marie Carol opened with a heartfelt thanks for South Florida, which she described in terms of, "the Center of the Hemisphere", full of diversity and unity, Silicon Beach." Her enthusiastic admiration for the area was welcomed.
Barry is 60 years old and has continued to grow and to diversify. In addition to the undergraduates, Barry has 2,600 attending courses in the Continuing Education Program through satellite sites throughout the area. They have begun operations in the Orlando area with the recent acquisition of a Law School. Even in the area of sports, Barry can now boast of both the Men and Women's Soccer Teams that are first in their AA conference, as well as volleyball Olympian Mickisha Hurley.
The newest acquisition is the old Biscayne Kennel
Club, located west of Barry's Miami Shores campus and Interstate 95. This will
be the location for a major expansion that will see the building of new classrooms
and offices, expanded dormitory facilities, the new Student Union, and a center
for the spiritualistic studies for the Dominican Order. It is the Order of Preachers,
or the Dominicans, which operate the Catholic University. The center will be
a focal point for the teaching and preaching that evolves out of contemplation,
which is the center of Dominican life.
Sister Marie Carol has demonstrated this Dominican view of actively manifesting true belief by participating in the betterment of others. She has been presented with numerous awards and been active in community concerns, such as her work in the Krome Detention Center working to find justice for Haitian refugees locked away in a legal limbo. She continues embodying the concept that peace can only come after justice. Sister Marie Carol now chairs the Peace Education Foundation, Inc.
She left us with a wish for a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sister added that the very first feast held in this country was one of thanksgiving, of sharing, and of joy. Senator Gwen Margolis presented a plaque commemorating and thanking Sister Marie Carol Hurley.
Thanks for your participation.
